About
The Saxonburg VFC BBQ Smokeout is an official cooking competition sanctioned by the Kansas City BBQ Society (KCBS). Cooking teams include local enthusiasts and BBQ businesses along with well-established cooks from multiple states, many who regularly devote their weekends across the county, earning points as part of a nationwide schedule of competitions. The event is currently one of two such events based in Western Pennsylvania.
BBQ is judged by certified KCBS volunteers according to strict criteria for appearance, taste and tenderness. Mathematical calculations determine final scores and prizes are awarded in categories that include chicken, ribs, pork, brisket and overall performance.
This event is part of the Saxonburg Volunteer Fire Company’s annual fundraising portfolio, raising money to support fire, rescue and EMS operations in Southern Butler County. Since its founding in 1931, the organization remains self -funded and does not rely on local taxes.

Saturday, August 29, is open to the public. Parking and admission is free, thanks to local sponsors. Gates open at 11 a.m. and attendees can witness cooking teams preparing their entrees for turn-in, utilizing a wide variety of BBQ equipment and processes. Competition teams are primarily focused on their entries and, due to PA health regulations, are not permitted to sell food to the public.
However, several BBQ vendors on-site will have plenty of great BBQ food ranging from traditional meats to smoked sides such as beans and corn on the cob. Truly delicious! Additional vendors will offer a variety of goods and services.
There will also be onsite entertainment, BBQ tours and classes, a tailgating contest and other activities that are open to the public between 11 a.m. and 5 p.m. If you love BBQ, this event is a fantastic combination of information, entertainment and enjoyment.

Competitor Info
This event includes officially sanctioned classes for both a KCBS Master Series Competition and KCBS Backyard Series Competition.
As such, both competitions will follow all KCBS rules.
Registration is open to all BBQ Teams, whether KCBS member or not.
A detailed schedule and additional information will be provided to registered teams as
the competition nears.

All judges must be KCBS certified and registration is handled via the KCBS website.
